Seoul runs on procedure. Surgical, dermatological, biotechnical, algorithmic, behavioral — sets of steps that take a body, an image, or a gesture as input and return something handled. The procedures are rarely visible. They are the substrate the city executes on.

PROTOKOL 001 stages three of them.

One operates on the face as a compositional problem with a solution.

One operates on the body as substrate for non-human reproduction.

One operates on intimacy as a sequence of approach without contact.

PROTOKOL is a touring exhibition series that asks what unspoken procedure a city runs on the people inside it. Each edition takes a number, a city, and a subject. The format is portable. The subject changes with the city.

A protocol is the script a system runs on a body. It is the procedure by which something gets handled, repeated until it becomes invisible. PROTOKOL surfaces these procedures by staging them. The series does not critique its subject from the outside. It runs the protocol, and lets what surfaces be the work.

PROTOKOL 001: Seoul examines the body. PROTOKOL 002 is in development for Istanbul. Each edition is conceived with artists working with the city it inhabits.

The series is open-ended.
